Privacy Policy

Effective September 21, 2026

This policy explains what EdTribune ("we," "us," "our") collects on edtribune.com and every state site under it, why, and what you can do about it. It is part of our Terms of Use.

Where we operate

EdTribune is for readers in the United States. We do not offer the Service in the European Union, the European Economic Area, or the United Kingdom, and we do not knowingly collect data from people there.

What we collect

If you create an account. Your email address, first and last name, the roles you pick (for example educator or parent), how you heard about us if you choose to say, which sign-in method you used (Apple, Google, Facebook, or an emailed link), and when you accepted our terms.

If you comment. The comment, your votes on comments, and when you posted. Comments are public and show the name on your account.

If you email us. Your message and address. If you are a school or government official replying to a request for comment, see section 5 of the Terms.

When you read the site. Our tools collect the technical details below. None of them receives your name or email from us.

• Google Analytics records pages viewed, time on page, the site that referred you, your device and browser type, and approximate location, using cookies. We turned off Google signals and ad personalization. It does not run if you opt out (see Your privacy choices).
• Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host, it sees your IP address and request details to deliver pages and block attacks. Its analytics count article views without cookies.
• Sentry receives error reports and a small sample of page-speed measurements: the page address (with sign-in codes removed), your browser and device type, and what went wrong. For signed-in readers it also receives a random account number that lets us see how many readers a bug affected. We set Sentry to receive no email address, IP address, or cookies.

Cookies

• Sign-in cookie (from Supabase, our account provider) keeps you signed in. Required for accounts.
• Privacy choice cookie (edt_privacy_optout) remembers that you turned off analytics, across every EdTribune state site.
• Google Analytics cookies (names starting with _ga) measure visits. Not set if you opt out.

How we use it

• to run the site, keep you signed in, and show your comments;
• to understand which stories people read, so we know what to cover;
• to find and fix bugs and slow pages;
• to email account holders about the Service and occasional voluntary surveys;
• to report the news, including contacting officials for comment;
• to protect the site and comply with the law.

What we don't do

We don't sell personal information. We don't share it for targeted (cross-context behavioral) advertising. We don't show ads. We don't use your data to make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects. We don't collect sensitive data such as health, precise location, or government ID numbers.

Who receives your data

Only the service providers that run the site for us: Cloudflare (hosting), Supabase (accounts and comments), Google (Analytics, and the email account we write from), and Sentry (error monitoring). Each may use it only to provide its service to us. We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or as part of a transfer of the Service, in which case this policy continues to apply.

Your privacy choices

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we treat it as an opt-out and Google Analytics never loads. You can also turn analytics off below. The choice applies to every EdTribune state site in this browser.

Cloudflare and Sentry keep running when you opt out. We need them to deliver the site and to fix it when it breaks, and neither is used for advertising.

Your rights

Several states give their residents privacy rights. We give the same rights to every reader in the United States, whichever state you live in:

• to know what personal information we have about you, and get a copy in a portable format;
• to correct information that is wrong;
• to delete your information (you can also delete your account and comments yourself from your profile page);
• to opt out of the sale of personal information, targeted advertising, and profiling. We don't do any of these, but the right is yours;
• to use these rights without being treated differently for it.

To make a request, email theedtribune@gmail.com from the address on your account, or tell us which address to look up and we will confirm it's yours before acting. Someone you authorize can make a request for you with your signed permission. We will respond within 45 days. If we need longer, we will tell you why, and take no more than 45 more days.

Appeals. If we turn down a request, reply with "appeal" and we will review it and answer within 60 days. If you are still not satisfied, you can contact your state attorney general.

Children

Accounts are for people 13 and older. If someone says during sign-up that they are under 13, we stop the sign-up and delete what they entered. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email us and we will delete it.

How long we keep it

We keep account information and comments until you delete your account; deleting it removes both. Analytics and error data are kept by Google, Cloudflare, and Sentry for the limited periods set in our accounts with them. Emails with sources are kept as part of our reporting records.

Security

We use encrypted connections, sign-in without passwords, and access limited to what each tool needs. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee that data will never be exposed. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you as the law requires.

Changes

We will post any update here with a new effective date. If a change is material, we will ask account holders to accept it at their next sign-in.
